A message from our President:

As we start a new year, I would like say thank you to all our members, our Executive Committee and Board of Directors who volunteer their time for the Society. We at SIO believe that 2011 offers many new opportunities. More and more cancer patients are taking advantage of what integrative oncology has to offer. With an increasing number of studies being conducted in the field, we expect to see important research data coming out. We also have the opportunity to contribute to the continuing changes in our health care system. Through the implementation of innovative ideas, we can strengthen our Society and lay the foundation for continuous growth for years to come.

Together we can achieve much more than any of us can individually.

Best of wishes throughout the New Year,

Gary Deng, MD, PhD
SIO President

Call for Workshops for the 8th International Conference of
the Society for Integrative Oncology

SIO 2011 Conference Call for Workshops and Symposia

We invite proposals for workshops or symposia to be held in conjunction with the Society for Integrative Oncology Annual International Conference to be held in Cleveland on November 9-12 2011. The conference will be chaired by Keith Block, MD (Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment) and Marja Verhoef, PhD (University of Calgary). The working title for the conference is “Innovating Integrative Oncology: Honoring the patient, personalizing the science.” Innovation and advancement in integrative oncology are major areas of interest. We thus encourage proposals on topics related to integrative oncology that are novel or of emerging importance. We are also interested in workshops that highlight the expertise of multiple types of integrative practitioners and will be attractive to different practitioner communities.

Workshops on research, clinical topics and patient advocacy are welcome. Experiential workshops or sessions (including movement therapies such as yoga or qi gong and other modalities of interest in cancer therapy) will also be considered. Each workshop proposal will be evaluated according to the value and relevance of its topic, the expertise and experience of the workshop organizers, and the workshop's potential for attracting participants and generating useful results. We stress the importance of active and creative workshops that foster a collaborative environment of interest to both practitioners and researchers. We encourage workshop proposals that are highly interactive, rather than a series of didactic or research presentations that leave no room for discussion. Projected length of programs: 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. Experiential sessions should be 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Please send workshop proposals to Dr. Keith Block ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) by no later than January 15, 2011. For submission guidelines please click here.

SIO welcomes volunteers for standing committees

SIO invites members to submit applications to be considered for participation on a standing committee (Membership Committee, Clinical Practice Committee, Research Committee, and Education Committee). Volunteers in committees provide an invaluable service to the organization and members by contributing to initiatives and projects that are critical to the continued development of the field. Volunteering members also gain professional enrichment and networking opportunities through the diverse activities of a committee.

The four standing committees engage in diverse activities such as strengthening membership within the organization, developing a practitioner network, selecting and disseminating important research findings and developing educational materials and programs. Please see below for guidelines and requirements for becoming a member of an SIO committee:

  1. Participate actively in the committee by attending committee meetings as scheduled and letting the chair know if you are not able to attend any meetings. (Members must participate in order to remain on the committee.)

  2. Follow through on assigned tasks by meeting deadlines, returning phone calls, responding to requests for input via e-mail, etc.

  3. Respect the opinions of other committee members and the role of the committee chair to build consensus on the specified task.

  4. All committee members must be active members in good standing with SIO

Members interested in being considered to serve on one of the SIO standing committees please submit the below listed information in order requested via email with “(Committee of Interest) Committee Member Request” in the subject line to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. From the SIO Executive Board Committee

A "National Prevention and Health Promotion Strategy" is being developed as part of the Affordable Care Act. The goal is to shift the nation from a focus on sickness and disease to one based on wellness and prevention. The National Prevention Council is inviting comments on the draft of the National Prevention Strategy. This represents an excellent opportunity for our voices to be heard and our ideals of integrative cancer care to be incorporated in the final National Prevention Strategy, which is to be released later this year.

We urge everyone who feels strongly about an integrative approach to health and wellness to take this opportunity to review the draft Strategy and make your comments at
http://www.hhs.gov/news/reports/nphps.html. The comment period ends this Thursday, January 13, 2011.

Thank you for your assistance and continued support,

Executive Board Committee
Society for Integrative Oncology

Special Acknowledgment

Congratulations go out to one of our very own Board Member, Dr. Dugald Seely, as the "Whole-Person Cancer Care Regardless of Income" project is now a finalist in the Aviva Community Fund Competition. Thank you for all your votes and support.
