New: Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Clinic

Bastyr University’s Integrative Oncology Clinic outpatient facility will provide state-of-the-science and state-of-the-art naturopathic and traditional Chinese medicine treatment and integrated management of cancer patients. The new Clinic will offer patients comprehensive support and treatment for each stage of their experience, from diagnosis to treatment decisions, and restoration of immune function and health after the completion of standard treatment.  Bastyr physicians  Using information gathered at the new Integrative Oncology Research Clinic (BIORC, for short), Bastyr University will collaborate with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle on a controlled outcomes study. This study will compare the ‘disease free survival’ and quality of life in cancer patients who are treated in the Integrated Oncology Research Clinic to patients living in Washington State who do not include complementary, alternative or integrated therapies in their treatment plans.

The Integrative Oncology Research Clinic physicians include Steve Given, DAOM (traditional Chinese medical oncology), Brad Lichtenstein, ND (mind-body medicine), Eric Yarnell, ND (prostate cancer), and Leanna Standish, ND, PhD, L.Ac., FABNO (naturopathic oncology and medical director).  Cancer patients will be evaluated and treated by experienced Chinese and naturopathic physicians who have advanced training and certification in integrative oncology.  Therapeutic approaches include mind/body medicine, qi gong, yoga, acupuncture, botanical and nutritional medicine. Clinic doctors will communicate with each patient’s medical and radiation oncologists to ensure truly integrated care.

Research requires funding. “We are very grateful to Cleavage Creek Winery for making the new Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Clinic possible,” says Leanna Standish, ND, PhD, LAc, FABNO, and Medical Director of the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Clinic. “It is a wonderful thing to be able to offer the best science-based, comprehensive natural medicine care to those fighting cancer. To receive the necessary funding to conduct scientific research surrounding the effectiveness of our therapies in partnership with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is a dream come true.”   All patients with cancer diagnoses who receive treatment and care at the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Clinic will be asked to participate in the research study to monitor the clinical and quality of life outcomes in cancer patients.  Call 425.602.3311 to schedule an appointment.
