General: Established in 1999, the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offers services and therapies that complement mainstream medical care, to anyone receiving cancer care, as well as non-cancer patients or those who are not ill but wish to increase self-awareness, enhance well-being, manage symptoms, and help prevent health-related problems.
Services: Consultations on the use of complementary and alternative medicine therapies are provided by Gary Deng, MD, PhD and Dr. Kathleen Wesa, MD. They advise patients on how to take advantage of integrative medicine while avoiding harms; how to develop comprehensive life style changes that promote physical and mental wellness and resilience; and how to use natural products judiciously before, during and after cancer treatment. Acupuncture, massage therapy, mind-body therapy, music therapy, fitness and exercise training, and nutrition counseling are provided by trained professionals. A variety of group classes are also available at discount rate.
Interests: The Service has a strong interest in acupuncture and botanical research, conducting both laboratory studies and clinical trials. Numerous educational programs, courses and lectures series are available to health care professionals, patients and the general public.
