10th International Conference of
the Society for Integrative Oncology
Translational Science in Integrative Oncology:
From Bedside, to Bench, to Best Practices

Over 300 physicians, researchers, nurses, integrative medicine practitioners, patient advocates and patients from 16 countries convened at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver, BC, Canada from October 20 to 22 at the 10th International Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology. Conference attendees examined the growing evidence base on the use of integrative therapies for cancer prevention and control. SIO2013 was presented in association with the University of British Columbia School of Medicine Department of Continuing Medical Education and the UBC School of Nursing. Conference presentations included topics on physical activity; cancer prevention and survivorship; cannabis in the treatment and management of cancer and related side effects; chemoprevention through natural health products and advances in nutrition therapy; and much more.

SIO2013 featured three outstanding keynote presentations. On Saturday, October 20 Victoria Sweet, MD, PhD presented "Slow Medicine, Fast Medicine: Putting Them Both Together." Dr. Sweet is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and a prize-winning historian with a PhD in medical history. She recently published God's Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine. On Monday, October 21, Kerry S. Courneya, PhD presented "Physical Activity and Cancer Prevention/Survivorship." Dr. Courneya is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity and Cancer at the University of Alberta—Edmonton. He is study co-chair of the Colon Health and Life-Long Exercise Change (CHALLENGE) Trial designed to determine the effects of exercise on disease-free survival in colon cancer survivors across Canada and Australia. Finally, on Tuesday, October 22, Frank Meyskens, MD, FACP presented, "Chemoprevention Through Natural Health Products." Dr. Meyskens is Chair of the ASCO Prevention Committee, SWOG Associate Chair of Cancer Prevention and Control, and Director Emeritus at the University of California Irvine's Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Two other conference highlights included a joint session by SIO and the American Society of Preventive Oncology on Cancer Survivorship Research, and a session highlighting new integrative oncology guidelines for the treatment of lung cancer developed by SIO members and published earlier this year in CHEST, the journal of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Presentations from the conference were videotaped and are available for purchase from Backcountry Productions. SIO members now have access to presentation slides and abstracts on the members-only section of the SIO website. Award winners and the Best of SIO abstracts are available in the awards section of this site. To view photos taken during SIO2013, visit our Facebook page.
