Society for Integrative Oncology Releases Findings Presented at the EIghth International SIO Conference

SIO Eighth International Conference Highlights Advances in Evidence-based Integrative Therapies for Cancer

CLEVELAND – Nov. 10, 2011 – Today the Society for Integrative Oncology highlighted top research findings presented at the Eighth International Conference this week in Cleveland, Ohio. More than 80 abstracts will be presented at the annual meeting, which will be keynoted by National Institutes of Health Director, Francis Collins, MD, PhD.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Innovating Integrative Oncology: New Science, New Solutions; ‘The Focus is the Patient.’”

UT MD Anderson study finds acupuncture can prevent radiation-induced chronic dry mouth

HOUSTON - When given alongside radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, acupuncture has shown for the first time to reduce the debilitating side effect of xerostomia, according to new research from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center.

The study, published in the journal Cancer, reported findings from the first randomized controlled trial of acupuncture for the prevention of xerostomia.

Farewell to a dear colleague and friend

We are saddened by the news that Dr. David Servan-Schreiber passed away on July 24, 2011, near his childhoodDavid Servan-Schreiber country home in Veulettes-sur-Mer, Normandy, France. Dr. Servan-Schreiber, a board member of our Society, championed the cause of integrative oncology. His influential, evidenced-based book “Anticancer: A New Way of Life” inspired and empowered countless cancer patients to take control of their fight against cancer.
