Abstract Content

Members of the Scientific Review Committee will evaluate the quality of the submitted abstracts on the basis of the following criteria: novelty of the research, significance of the findings, and clarity. Authors should be particularly cognizant of the importance of setting forth the objectives and hypotheses/research questions of the study in a clear, succinct manner and of summarizing the results (if applicable). If the abstract is poorly written, such that the Scientific Review Committee cannot determine its novelty and importance, the abstract will not be accepted for presentation at the Conference.

Authors must indicate whether the abstract material has been presented at other scientific meetings. Abstracts previously presented at another scientific meeting are eligible to be selected for poster or oral presentation, but are not eligible for the “Best of SIO” designation. If the research has been accepted for publication or has been recently published, it is the author’s responsibility to make sure that the journal’s copyright rules are not violated.

Abstract Format: Research abstracts should contain: (a) an introductory sentence indicating the purposes of the study; (b) a brief description of pertinent methodological procedures; (c) a summary of the findings; and (d) a statement of the conclusions. Non-research abstracts (e.g., program description, methodological issues) should contain: (a) an introductory sentence describing the purpose of the presentation; (b) brief description of main concepts; and (c) a statement of conclusions. Authors must accept sole responsibility for the statements in their abstracts. Abstracts should be carefully proofread to avoid errors in the published literature. Abstracts must be submitted in English and following the instruction of American Spelling that is described in Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, Seventh Edition (Council of Science Editors, 2006).

Length of Abstracts: The combined length of the abstract body may not exceed 300 words. The SIO Abstract Submission System will not accept abstracts that exceed this limit.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION PROCEDURES

SIO Online Abstract Submission System: Authors must submit abstracts for presentation at the Ninth International Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology using the SIO Abstract Submission System. After creating an abstract entry, an author can create, modify, upload a pdf file and re submit an abstract until the deadline for abstract submissions. Note Regarding Internet Browsers: To optimize the performance of the SIO Abstract Submission System, authors are strongly encouraged to upgrade their Internet browser to Microsoft Internet Explorer version 8.0 or higher or other equivalent browser.

Abstract Submission Number: An Abstract Submission Number will be assigned to each abstract submitted through the SIO Abstract Submission System. This number will be displayed at the top of the submitter screen and will be listed on all e-mail correspondence regarding the abstract. Please refer to the Abstract Submission Number in any subsequent abstract communications.

Submission of Abstracts/Confirmation of Receipt: Presenters are strongly encouraged to print a copy of their abstract for their records before submitting. At the time of submission, an email will be sent to the corresponding author at the address provided in the SIO Abstract Submission System. In addition, once the abstract deadline has passed a confirmation of receipt will be sent to the presenting authors of all valid abstracts. Notifications of abstract status will be sent by early August 2012. Once an abstract has been submitted, it may be edit or withdrawn via the SIO Abstract Submission System using the Abstract Submission Number and the password that was supplied at the time of submission.

Accuracy of Abstracts: The accuracy of the submitted abstract is the responsibility of the authors. Although abstracts will be typeset for print and electronic distribution, they will not be edited for typographical errors or corrected by SIO staff except as needed to conform to publication style. Therefore, authors should carefully prepare and proofread their abstracts prior to submission.

If you have completed an abstract submission, you may log in and edit the abstract as often as you wish until the abstract submission deadline. However, once abstract submission has closed, no additional more changes to the abstracts will be accepted.

EARLY INVESTIGATOR AWARD

SIO will award Early Investigator Awards to early career investigators who submit New Original Research for the conference. To qualify for consideration for an Early Investigator Award, the first author must be a graduate student, post-doctoral fellow, resident, or fellow. An SIO Early Investigator Award includes conference registration, travel costs (hotel, airfare, and ground transportation), and a ticket to the Awards Banquet.

Proposals are also being accepted for workshops to be held during the Ninth International Society for Integrative Oncology Conference. The theme of the conference is “Honoring Diversity in Cancer Control and Prevention”. The role of integrative oncology in cancer control and prevention in the context of diversity are major areas of interest.

We thus encourage proposals on topics related to integrative oncology that address health disparities, cancer prevention and control through integrative care. We are also interested in workshops that highlight the expertise of multiple types of integrative practitioners and will be attractive to different practitioner communities.

Workshops on research, clinical topics and patient advocacy are welcome. Experiential workshops or sessions will also be considered. Each workshop proposal will be evaluated according to the value and relevance of its topic to the conference’s theme, the expertise and experience of the workshop organizers, and the workshop's potential for attracting participants and generating useful results. We stress the importance of active and creative workshops that foster a collaborative environment of interest to both practitioners and researchers. We encourage workshop proposals that are highly interactive, rather than a series of didactic or research presentations that leave no room for discussion. Workshops are 75 minutes in length.

SIO Workshop Submission Guidelines:

A research, clinical or patient advocacy workshop proposal must be authored by at least two organizers, preferably from different institutions. Experiential sessions may be organized by one person. Proposals should contain the following three sections:

1) About the Organizers:

Name: Organizers full name
Contact information: Affiliation, job title, postal address, email address, URL, phone number, and fax number
Brief biography: 100-200 words, focusing on the organizer's expertise in the field and experience as a workshop organizer
Primary contact: Identify one organizer as the primary contact

2) About the Workshop:

Title: Workshop title and acronym if relevant

Abstract: 200-300 words describing the workshop, suitable for the conference Web site and advance programTopics and motivation: What are the topics, themes, and areas of interest of the workshop?

How is the workshop relevant to integrative oncology, diversity, cancer control and/or prevention?

How does the workshop connect SIO to other practitioner communities, if at all?

Goals and expected results: Explicitly state the goals of the workshop and how you intend to reach them. What are the expected results of the workshop? How will these results be disseminated?

Format: What is the planned workshop format? What will be done to stimulate collaborative interaction? Are there planned pre- and post-workshop activities?

Previous workshops: Have there been previous workshops on the same topic? When, where, and how many participants?

Required equipment: Overhead projector, PC projector, whiteboard, flip charts, microphone, etc.

By submitting a workshop proposal, the organizer(s) agree that:

1. The proposal complies with the ethics of scholarly activities in general and is free of commercial bias.

2. Organizers and speakers must disclose conflicts of interest as required by continuing education accreditation bodies.

3. SIO has the right of reviewing and selecting proposals at its sole discretion.
