US Cancer Survivors Grows to Nearly 12 Million

The number of cancer survivors in the United States increased to 11.7 million in 2007, according to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health. There were 3 million cancer survivors in 1971 and 9.8 million in 2001.

A cancer survivor is defined as anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, from the time of diagnosis through the balance of his or her life.

The study, "Cancer Survivors in the United States, 2007," is published today in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Cancer and Complementary Medicine - Update from NCAM

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCAM) provides up to date information and resources for patients, doctors and researchers interested in Complementary Medicine.

A special analysis of 2002 NHIS data found that CAM use was more prevalent among people with a prior diagnosis of cancer. About 40 percent of cancer survivors reported using CAM; 18 percent had used multiple CAM therapies. The most popular CAM therapies among cancer survivors were herbal and other natural products (20 percent), deep breathing (14 percent), and meditation (9 percent).
